Dance and Anxiety

I took my first dance class when I was three years old.  My mom tells me that when we would get to class I would immediately ask her "when are we going home?"  Years later when I was nine years old, my mom wanted to take a dance class and I decided to come with her and that was the day I signed up for three styles of dance; Ballet, Tap and Jazz.  I really enjoyed dancing so I joined my studios competitive team.  When I was in 8th grade I was on my middle school dance team and I loved it. We were even state champions for Junior High Hip Hop.  After 8th grade, I went to try out for my high school dance team.  My high school are 26 times state champions and 15 times national champions.  You have to be the best of the best to get on this team.  The first day of try outs there must of been at least 50 girls in the studio.  It was so stressful trying to learn choreography in a sea of other dancers.  I cried in the car on the way home, but I decided to give it one one more shot the next day, but it wasn't any better and I ended up crying some more and did not return for the rest of the tryouts.

After this I wasn't dancing and my mental health was getting bad.  I was depressed and anxious all of the time.  I finally went to see a doctor and was prescribed medicine to help with my depression and anxiety, but I still felt useless, worthless, and like I wasn't doing anything important with my life.  My mom saw that my old studio was having dance team auditions and we also had a new teacher/coach along with my old teacher and asked if I wanted to go.  I went to the auditions and felt very shy and nervous.  The girls I had danced with their when I was younger were all gone, everyone was new.  But I was put on a team, a very small team, but I was back to dancing.  Six older girls and five younger girls, that was our team.  I fell back in love with dance again and my mental health got better.  Now we have 13 girls on our senior team, 8 girls on our junior team, and 4 girls and 1 boy on our mini team.

Dance helps so much with my depression and anxiety.  I can just be free and if I am feeling down I can just put on a song and dance all my feelings out.  I continue to dance to this day.  I take multiple classes and I am now an assistant coach for my studios dance team and I teach at a different dance studio.  I also am on the dance team here at school and have enjoyed making new friends and working together with my team mates.
